Loosing track of time when sleeping

Which activities make you lose track of time?

Sleeping is one of the common activities where we often completely lose track of time and that’s because of how our brain works during sleep. When we’re awake, we’re constantly aware of time in small ways we check clocks, we feel the passing of minutes, and we measure time through our actions like walking, eating, or even thinking.

But when we fall asleep, it’s like our brain temporarily switches to a different mode. It stops tracking time in the usual way. Our conscious mind the part that’s aware, thinking, and alert shuts down so the brain can focus on repairing the body, processing memories, and recharging energy. During this time, we’re not paying attention to anything happening around us, and we have no real sense of minutes or hours passing.

That’s why sleep often feels like a time jump. You might close your eyes at 10 PM and the next thing you know, it’s 6 AM. You were unaware of the hours in between because your mind wasn’t actively recording them like it does when you’re awake. Even when we dream, our sense of time is warped a dream that feels like it lasted hours might have only lasted a few minutes in real time.

So, sleeping doesn’t just rest your body it temporarily disconnects you from the regular flow of time. It’s one of the few everyday things we do where our experience of time almost completely disappears.
