A Reflection on Purpose, Presence, and the Beauty of Nightly Devotion.
If you didn’t need sleep, what would you do with all the extra time?
The idea of a life without sleep often sparks thoughts of productivity, adventure, and new opportunities. Yet, for some of us, the question carries a deeper and more spiritual weight. Sleep itself is a mercy given to human beings, a necessary pause designed by the Creator who neither sleeps nor becomes weary. So when we imagine life without it, which is not possible, we begin to ask: What would we do with hours no longer claimed by rest? Where would we direct that abundance of time? For me, the answer unfolds with clarity and conviction: I would devote the entire night to the remembrance of my Creator.
To remember God is more than uttering sacred phrases or performing ritual acts. It is a complete and holistic state of consciousness that engages the mind, the heart, and the soul. The remembrance I envision is purposeful, shaped by gratitude, reflection, humility, and the pursuit of divine closeness. It is a form of remembrance that transforms the inner self, refines conduct, and elevates one’s sense of moral responsibility.
If sleep were no longer necessary, the silent hours of the night would become my sanctuary, an intimate space in which I deepen my connection with the Most Merciful. In this uninterrupted stillness, I would engage in subordination, reflection on the divine attributes, study of the revealed words, and sincere introspection. These practices are more than spiritual exercises. They are pathways to purification and renewal.
Drawing nearer to God is not simply a devotional luxury. It is the essence of my existence. My purpose is rooted in obedience, righteousness, service, and the timeless call to encourage what is right and to restrain what is harmful. The absence of sleep would not create an empty space. It would reveal an opportunity to embody this purpose more fully.
Night in many traditions symbolizes depth, sincerity, and hidden treasures of wisdom. Freed from worldly distractions, the heart becomes more receptive, more attentive, and more capable of absorbing truth. The quiet of a sleepless night would allow me to cultivate spiritual discipline, strengthen my resolve, and align my actions with divine pleasure. These hours would not simply be spent. They would shape me into a more conscious, compassionate, and principled human being.
In a world where time often feels limited, imagining a life without sleep reveals what truly matters to us. For me, the answer is not found in adding more tasks but in enriching the most foundational relationship of all, the relationship between the created and the Creator. The remembrance of God is not an escape from life. It is what gives life its clarity, purpose, and meaning. If granted endless wakefulness, I would embrace the night as a blessing, a sustained moment of devotion through which I could draw nearer to the One who gives all things their being.
